pray upon his mind: his patience at length wearied out.
The people in their turn become odious to him. He

Despairing of their affection, and through despair affecting to despise it, he gives
more & more into measures calculated as he thinks to guard him against
their enmity: he makes war upon them in return

And to what is all this owing? —
Accused incessantly at the bar of the public he lets judgment go against him by default: he says
nothing in his defence. What wonder if he is condemned?

at some inauspicious hour he should be, according to the power of what passes among

How then should he seek to help
himself? There are but two ways. To answer himself
