An Account of the Villainy that is carried on in regard to the
Buying and Selling Horses.
Whereas it has been the common Practice
of divers Persons who call themselves Horse dealers unde Color
of Selling Horses that are Stolen and distemper'd in different
Fairs Markets &c (and when these Gentlemen Horse Dealers
who vouch for each other gets a Glander'd Horse or one that is
not Sound they get an infernal Blackguard (as they have always
these sort of BPeople following them to sell these Horses; but, as
Soon as Sold the owner of the said Horse, comes up to the Person
Drest like a Gentleman and says Sir have you bought this
Horse? I am sorry to say that it is a Glander'd one". —
Then the Thief goes away for some Time — Then up comes
another of the Party, and says, "what a damned Rascal that
"Fellow must be to sell you that Horse! But I do not
mind, for I keep nothing but Glander'd Horses to work.
I'll give you 2 Guineas for it — After the Poor Man has given
13 or 14 Guineas for it, and then up comes the Sharper "I have
done him"! — There is generally four or five of these Sort of
People goes together — and after they have done the business
of the Day they all meet together at some particular Place
and equally divide the plunder; and afterwards after taking
in 2 or 3 in that manner and then the same Party takes
the Horse to some other Fair or Market.
And I Richard Minton have heard them Say
divers times and make their Braggs of clearing £10 each in
a Market Fair, &c. in swindling and possibly in coming
home they would say to me in conversation Minton! you are
"Flat for when you have got a good Snot, you will not sell it
"but knock it on the Head as a damned Flat as you are! I have
"known a man of your Business get upwards of £10 a Day —
"If any of us should happen to get into Prison you allow us
