itself at the first step: and advance together: every enjoy exertion has
present enjoyment for its recompence to reward and sweeten it.

A taste for music again, the more common diffused it is
is not only proportionably the more productive as a source innocent of enjoyment
in a community but it is the purer the more exempt from danger.
It is an observation a remark I remember hearing made among
grave citizens, quoting their own experience and speaking
of times some 50 or 60 years back, when music a taste was
less common than at present that a good voice is a formidable
snare to a young man in business. Why? – because
when the talent of singing is rare, and a mark
of distinction it falls naturally into a connection with the habit of drinking.
The habit of passion taste for drinking being already established
and predominant, draws the new taste new formed and weaker fashion into the vortex.
Melpomene becomes the waiting-made not to say the prostitute
of Bacchus, and dragged in chains behind his car.
The talent, though thus degraded, at the same time agreeable and being by the supposition
rare, is proportionably a mark of distinction: conferring
on the possessor the faculty of pleasing it renders him his company
an object of courtship & competition and among his fellows: he is admitted
and invited into those parties where drinking is the principal
enjoyment, musical song the accessory, and where music instead
of being its own reward is paid for in the only universally
current coin and evidence of social intercourse in those
societies, strong intoxicating liquor. From the same quarter the
