Had the body of laws in this country any
limits, shape or even existence (for non-existence is
the characteristic and distinctive attribute of all that
pass of it which goes by the name of Common Law)
even had this at present boundless shapeless and but
half existent body ever to be put in possession tolerably compleat of limits
shape and existence, not to speak to say nothing of reason some of the leading principles
of it, whether a whether associated accompanied with melody or no might for this purpose be clothed
at least in rhime. But where existence itself is
wanting, to say nothing of reason rationality, it seems to early
to speak even to think of rhime. The points of Ld Coke's Reports
are were to be found in meter: and there, if you will give
up reason you may find law in company with rhime, in company.

The direct object of instruction in this line the subjecting the voice to
the laws of melody and harmony will be accomplished
more or less in greater or less degree⊞ < or in some instances may fail altogether according to the natural capacity
of each pupil, and the talent of the instructor: but
the indirect and collateral object, the fixing the sense
in the memory may be attained in equal degree in
both cases: and thus it is the more important of the two
that in some measure or other can not fail of being
attained accomplished. Whether a man sings well or ill will matter
but little, if by singing he has stocked his memory with useful
things.
