3. In regard to the order of commencement, as between study and
study, natural facility, not usage, should be decide the arbiter,
ideas the measures of facility or vicinity to sense should be first communicated which are least remote This regards
from sense: and among those such as are equidistant the subject maters: on the part of the agent, facility is increased
from sense, such are as are most perceptibly because efforts are augmented, by the apparancy of the connection
conjoined with intelligible use.(11) Those studies stand
nearest to sense in which instruction consists in is conveyed by presenting
individ to the senses individual objects, or their imitations:
– specimens, models, or pictures graphical representations: those are most remote
to sense which are occupied have for their subject matter
the operations of the mind. Here therefore as well as everywhere
else the natural history should be the first thing taught: grammar (a
branch of logic) among the last: viz: if taught at all, which here
and not pursued to the utmost.

By a due attention to these principles, the quantity of really useful
knowledge that might thus have been administered communicated to the lowest class of the community by
the time of their arrival
at full age might be
greater than what is usually
communicated in the
course of that period to the
highest class – and, that
with any sacrifice or loss of time
with reference to industry
any more than to any of the
other objects. The spare time of
Sunday would be sufficient.
