especially sports unattended with cruelty and connected with exercise and the open air.
excepting hunting and all others of cruel sports
3. To encourage musical and other theatrical amusements
giving them all a pressing them into the service
of religion and morality, by confining the hearers to such
as manifested that tendency. 4. To take care that
no places of amusement much less any drinking places
should be open at Church hours. 5. So to order
matters, as much as possible, in regard to such amusements
or admitted of it, that time should
be in those who had not been to Church.
6. To give every encouragement possible in the way of extension
and improvement to the grand Church-amusement
psalmody. I am sensible that the plan
here proposed approaches in so far to the practice of Roman
Catholic countries. But this repugnancy to morality observable
in that the practice of that church be repugnant to morality in some points
is no reason for avoiding it in those it is favourable
to morality. What is more this is the very plan
set on foot in our own Church during in the time in the middle of
the last century
of Archbishop Land: and which was driven out
of the Church at the time when the Church was driven out of the
state, not by reason and philosophy, but by fanatical
prejudice and violence. If there was but little
good in the principles or practices of the Archbishop
in whose views of religion the Book of Sports originated,
I see not why we should be debarred from profiting
by that little. I hope at any rate to receive experience
indulgence at least from that Church, in espousing a favourite
principle of the virtuous as well as religious though
unfortunate King, whom it numbers and celebrates
among its martyrs.
