portion of their time the incapable of being thus disposed
of. But why shou devotion excepted, to what good purpose
should it in any b such degree? These occupations purposes
though distinct in idea are by no means
neither exclusive of each other nor even
in all instances distinct from each other in
practice. All of them being desirable – all of them
adapted to the nature and subservient to the happiness
of the individual, hence a general and fundamental rule –
the more of these purposes a given occupation can
be made subservient to, the better: and as labour,
productive labour stands at the head of the list
the principal application of the rule is – Labour
ought to be throughout the predominant purpose
but as many whatever time is allotted to this
purpose ought to be made applicable the
application of it ought to be extended to as many
of those other beneficial purposes as possible.
Happiness indeed is includes every thing is included: and comfort is
but another word for happiness considered with reference to the moment:
that portion of time being filled with comfort, which
is filled up by pleasure of sor one sort or
another unalloy'd by pain or at least any equivalent
portion of pain. But in providing for
productive labour when not the mass being neither excessive nor duly composed
(when composed in short according to the employment-changing
principle) health and strength
are provided for by the same means at the same time. And where
