Walking on the inside or on the outside of a
wheel, not the virtual wheel, and drawing
or pushing against the spikes of a horizontal
wheel or capstern are applications modes modes of exertion
too obvious to need insisting on. An objection
common to them all is that slowness of pace
is an inseparable concomitant: to them so that the
muscles by which the actions of running and
leaping are produced, do not come in for their
share in the exercise.

The following contrivance exercise has more of play
in it consisting of an alternation of running
walking or running and pleasant relaxation, has
the advantage of uniting sport with mechanical
use. Let an inclined plane a fixt stage, composed consisting
of an inclined plane, in lieu answer the purpose of a staircase
under leading to an horizontal stage
playing which plays up and down, according to the absence pressure
or pr absence of a certain quantity of weight.
The descent of this stage must be gradual, such
as it would be if for example the motion
produced by it were employ'd⊞ ⊞ against a burthen yielding by degrees, as in the case of a fluid sprouting out of an orifice, for example when driven out by to work a pump
of the forcing kind. This working stage might be
furnished with a seat with partitions. One part of the sport would
consist in trying which could run fastest up the sloping
stage, so as to place himself in the chief seat of the working
stage, which when it has thus got its complement of weight, descends
and gives the stroke.
