experiments, that in such a situation might be made
upon the human species, and steadily carried on, with the
utmost regularity and constancy accurately noted,
punctually registered, and the result and benefit universally promulgated, and
the benefit universally diffused.
(3) No other exercise can altogether supply the
place of loco-motive exercise: nothing but walking
and running can exercise the muscles in the same
proportion, fibre to fibre, as walking and running,
nor therefore qualify a man to exert those energies in
perfection: but when accompanied with other strong exercises
a little of these may serve. A waterman
who should never walk, would have little need of other
exercises to keep himself in good health: yet a child
designed for a waterman should sometimes walk, because
at some time or other every man may have
need to walk.
