St. Giles in the Fields & St George Boomsbury
17th March 1797.
Sir
The Vestry Clerks of these Parishes having communicated to us
your Letter wherein you request us to send you "an account of the
"present state of the Poor under our Management, and the sums of Money
"disbursed for their support and relief, by filling up the Blanks in the
"inclosed Statement", – in answer thereto, we beg leave to observe to you that
we have been informed the same Statement, together with a similar request,
was, within a few weeks past, laid before the Joint Vestry of these Parishes,
and that such Vestry declined giving any directions concerning the same;
therefore we (who act in conjunction with that Vestry in the Management &c
of the Poor, and according to such Rules Orders and Regulations as that
Vestry alone are empowered to make) cannot consider ourselves as authorized
to comply with your request: and confiding, as we have reason to do, in
the experience, discernment and good intentions of the Vestry, we are fully
persuaded that we should act consistantly in the performance of our
official duty if we were to do what that Vestry has so recently declined.
Be pleased to accept our thanks for your good intentions towards
our Parishes
We are
Sir
Your most obedt. hble Servts.
