From the receipt of anonymous information
there is this one plain and undeniable advantage
is obtainable – viz: the obtaining information
in cases where from apprehension of revenge
on the part of the persons whose d enterprizes are
exposed to defeat, or their persons to punishment
by it, or from apprehension of popular odium
or from mere bashfulness a a very as extensive and
powerful a cause perhaps as any, a man
having true information to give and act meaning
would not give information to give any that was not true would otherwise not give any at all, if he did
not give it in this way.
On the other hand the danger is in at
least what imaginable danger there can be, must
be of this sort – that lest under favour of the
difficulty of discovering the author of the calumny
thus convey'd – calumny will should
be convey'd: i:e: information charging the
individual concerned with having been concerned
in some enterprize the effect of which when
discovered is to subject him to either to actual
punishment so called – viz: to punishment at
the hand of the law – or at least some inconvenience,
which with reference to his fe interests
or feelings shall have the effect of punishment.
