But though a man's life, or his liberty, or
his money can not be taken away from him
by this means in the way of punishment
legally inflicted and properly so called, yet
in an oblique and secret way, not according to law, his
reputation may thus be made to suffer in a
certain degree (it may be said) notwithstanding his perfect innocence,
and his hopes chance of bettering himself by advancement
in various ways be defeated.
