It is satisfactory that to perceive
that the public mind is beginning
to awaken on the subject of the
education of the labouring classes. At
Salford a meeting has been held on
the subject. At At Manchester another
meeting is to be held will be is is
to be held to take into consideration
the education of the poorer classes in
that town. The subject is taken up
by persons of w who usually take
no part in political questions. We
were glad to observe that it found
occupied the attention of the one
of the most valuable and best conducted
departments of the British association
for the advancement of Science
namely the statistical section.
In the manufacturing districts attention
to the subject has been promoted
by such men as Messrs. Greg of Bollington and the
Messrs Ashworth of Turton, men whose
intellectual elevated for attainments and
pursuits do honor to their own class of
manufacturers and by their attention to
the improvement of the condition of
their those do of workpeople in their
employment; by improvements in their dwellings
and effects the by otherwise promoting
their comforts and providing education for
their children; besides the direct good
done they confer on the many thousands
of persons and in their employment
render an the public important service by shewing, how
beneficently the extensive influence of larger
capitalists and employers of labourers
may be directed for the advancement of
