Courts. This was might be inconvenient
but in the meantime – but that inconvenience
would only be temporary – and there had
be been instances of other judges holding
the seals for years together. It was worth
while to make an experiment for some
time rather than appoint a new judge
permanent judge – for life undoubtedly
for he presumed, it was not intended to
make him removable at pleasure
like the Chancellor – with a great salary,
when it might turn out, as in his
conscience he believed it would, that
the evil might be got rid of in a year.
The result would be that they would have
a judge with a large salary and no
duty to perform. However eminent the
person to be appointed might be he must be
a judge of extraordinary qualifications indeed to
rival the present Master of the Rolls. In
all probability no causes would be set down
before him and the office would become
a great lucrative sinecure – though he did
not at all mean to assert that any
