inquiry he thought absolutely necessary
to a right understanding of the subject
and therefore could have no hesitation
in voting for his hon. friend's motion –

Mr Perceval. They had now before them the
view which the Lords took of this subject – the
amount of the arrears and the means suggested
to reduce them. – It appeared from the Report
that of the arrear of appeals and writs of
error amounted altogether to 338 – and it
was proposed to dedicate in other sessions
a longer proportion of their time to the hearing
of these causes that the arrear might be
got rid of. – His hon. and learned friend (Sir S.
R.) had said that adverted to the short
time that the Chancellor had sat upon
original causes in the two last terms – and
to the circumstance that the house of
Lords had been so much occupied with
or other things such as committees
of privilege that nothing had been done
in expediting appeals when during the present
session. He had adverted also stated that
it was a rule of that house that
the Committee of privileges could not
sit while the house was sitting after the house had once sat. As far as
