The hearing sight and

language addressed
to each.
The Characteristics
of each language.
Fictitious entities
account of.
What passes in our
minds can only be
spoken of as a portion
of space with portions
of matter at rest
or moving in it are
thereupon in the way
of fiction.
Distinction of the
fictions of the logician
from those of
the poet or the
politician.
The material sources
of perception names
are easily attached,
the source being present
to the perception
of both parties
at the same time
in the same form.
Not so in the case
of an object of
which the seat
lies in the mind i.e.
in the case of an
immaterial object.
For producing in any
other mind whatever
a conception of an
object of this class
I must speak of it
as if it belonged to
the other class to
present to the party
addressed some
sign with the signification
of which he
is already acquainted

in the character of
a sign of avowal
n immaterial object
and upon the resemblance
or rather
analogy such as it
which has place
between the material
object of
which it was originally
the sign
and the immaterial
object of which it was employed as
a sign, upon this
analogy, do I depend
for the chance of
the signs
creating in his mind
the idea which on
the occasion it is
my endeavour to
excite: viz the
idea of the
immaterial object.
Applied to the
purpose of designating
any object
of the class of
material objects
a sign is or may
be named the sign or name
of a real entity:
applied to the
purpose of designating
any object of
the class of immaterial
objects a sign
cannot be the sign
of anything but
a fictitious entity.
Under the appellation
of a real entity is
to be understood
the name of some
object of the existence
of which of
and in itself a
seious persuasion
on whatever grounds
is entertained
but a nobody
bodies corporeal
sustains

By the denomination
of philosophers termed
materialists the expence
of any such
expedient in the
composition of any
theories of animate
the human not excepted
in the character of
a separate ingredient
is denied. But as
many others believe
the title of soul and
mind may be admitted
without dispute.
So with the being
meant to be
represented by the
term God.
All fictitious entities
have their roots
in real ones and
you do not understand
the fictitious entity until
you see the real
one in which it has
its root.
Aristotle under the
name of the first
substance designated
what has here been
brought to view
under the character
of names of real
entities.
Now A material
rummage is the only
instrument by which
– the only medium
through which conception
can be conveyed from mind
to mind.
In the earlier days
of society the more
indistinct have
been all conceptions
and thence consequently
all expressions were
generally altogether indistinct:
it is only by being continued
are courses
of attention that

adverted to under
the head fictitious
entities.
Figurative language

Qualities possessed
by the subject of an
impression on the
senses.
Example an apple
quality to the eye roundness
touch of smoothness
to smell
taste sweetness smell
odorousness
Quality of
existence in
a place
a portion of time
– motion
Motion and rest
considered.
The But the
absence of motion
To consider motion
is to consider
substances.
A perceptible real
entity is no body
The name body is
the name of the
genus generalissimus
of that class of
real entities called
substances.
An entity is a denomination
in the
import of which
every subject matter
of discourse for
the designation of
which the grammatical
part of
speech called a name
substantive may be
comprised.
Entities are perceptible
and inferential.
