Court Bill Language or Nomography
(2)
In case of conciseness the same ideas are
presented by the concise discourse as by the non-concise:
and at a less expence in the shape of words
to the writer & the reader.
Compactness – this has place in so far as portions
of discourse relating to the same subject have
place consecutively without intervention of other matter.
5. Orderliness – this has place in so far as
that portion of matter which ought to come
first stand first – that which ought to come second
stand second & so on.
Why the first ought to come first & the second
second requires further explanation.
(1)
1. Comprehensiveness – all comprehensiveness
– this quality comes first as
it belongs to the matter of the discourse –
of which matter the following
are but qualities.
2. Clearness – this comes next,
as being the most essential of all the
qualities
3. Conciseness –
4. Compactness
5. Clearness includes exemption
from obscurity & exemption from
ambiguity.
Clearness from obscurity comes first:
because till the obscurity is cleared
away no idea at all is of the discourse
in question presented to the mind.
Ambiguity comes next – the bad effect of it is
of tghe two ideas presented the danger of taking the
wrong one: whence comes on the part of the writer misrepresentation – on
the part of the reader, misconception.
