1832 Jany 19
Collectanea – Parish Registers – Abuse and Remedy.

Moreover, there is another suggestion which I make,
and make upon good grounds, in consequence of the many instances
I can make adduce of culpable and shameful neglect – namely
that every Cleargyman should be compelled to enter every babtism,
marage, or burial in the register, immediately the service has
been performed.

I am well aware of the tenacity with which the Clergy watch
any proposition likely to annoy, or arouse their indolence; but as
such omissions of duty in the register manifested detri derelictions
of their duties, the call for punishment of the offender,
ceases to be unreasonable.

To guard as much as possible against any omissions, each
leaf of the Parish Register books should contain three distinct
divisions on each line. The two lines of divisions to be like a banker's
check. The book to be used with the back thereof from the person
writing – not on his left side. The object of this method of arrangement
being, that the entries should be made the length way
of the register.

Each service of marriage, burial, or entry should be entreated
along this line – making three entires in all; one whereof to be
given to the parties attending; office, and the centre
one to remain among
another to be sent quarterly to the
Metropolitan office, and the centre one to remain among
the Church Records; so that the authenticity of the other
Registers at any future time, may be proved by collation with
the sheet from which they were taken.

Trusting that these suggestions may meet with attention,
and that some means may be devised to preserve our national
records, as well as to insure correct and proper entries therefore
hereafter.

I Remain your obident Servant.
SELIM.
