1) LAW ESSAYS.
Panegyric on the dead.
A dead man stands in no man's way: when smitten, he smiteth not again:
he is but a passive enemy, and he is no
man's rival. A dead man cannot be can neither
be Chief Justice Chancellor &c Field Marshal nor Corporal. Admiral nor Boatswain 1st Lord of the Treasury nor Exciseman. 1st Lord of the Admiralty nor Master Caulker Member of Parliament nor of the -----. Club. nor Mace bearer. Keeper of the Seals
nor of the Lions nor so much as Commissioner of Bankrupts. The Law For these much-sollicited offices envied stations not even Parliament with its omnipotence, were it disposed could make qualify him.
Among those who have studied the moral qualities of brutes, a living dog is held to be better than
a dead Lion: but among men human creatures, a dead man
is universally acknowleged to be more estimable
than a live one. if he were alive.
[He is universally acknowleged to be good company:
since] his decorum is such, that after he has
once said what he has to say, which every one
is at liberty to attend to or not as he thinks
proper, he never sets himself afterwards to contradict.
He is accordingly universally respected
in the very best of companies.
That Parliamentary omnipotence that "vast power of a
"Statute", which as a great compiler informs
us can upon occasion turn a woman into a man, and
which every day with or without occasion
turns a dea live man into a dead one, would
find itself at a stand, should it attempt to
change hands at a surplus, & turn a dead man into a live one. .. can cure him of that one amiable defect [dulce vitam] the source of his disabilities and his merits.
