Experimenting

that would be gained by them. This is one of
the first things that should be done.(a)

NOTE

This was the course taken by the Oeconomical
society of Haarlem at the very beginning of its
establishment. The plan of our own Society of Arts
is different in this respect. Single members stand
up and propose single subjects at a time Subjects
for pre are consider'd no more than
one at a time. When a No member thinks of
proposing two or more together: nor does any member
think of proposing anyin order to be consider'd at the same
time with any that have been proposed by
another member. Such at least is the matter custom
at present: perhaps at the first institution of the
society it might have been otherwise. The opposite
custom seems preferable. Many an experiment
might seem useful worth trying wh when consider'd
by itself, at the might seem worth trying, at the
sametime that if adopted it would stand in the way
of others which wouldhave deserved the preference.
