In instituting and carrying on experiments
relative to the construction and use of vessels there
are three rules which it may be of use to keep
constantly in view.

Rule 1. Rule of Comprehensioniveness

Be careful in searching out and attending
to all the circumstances that can at all influence
the result of the experiment: and wherever a standardvessel
other object managed in the ordinary way is taken & made use of standardas influencing
