Premiums to
be part honorary
part pecuniary
Such premium might consist either of a
silver medal, alone or of a gold medal alone,
or of either accompanied by a sum of money:
The medals might be given alone without any
money: but the money should not be given
alone without a medal.
Reasons Were nothing to be
had but a medal, it would be no adequate inducement to ingenious men whose
incomes depended upon the use they made of their time
and might not be able to afford Were nothing
but money offer'd, men of independent
incomes might through delicacy disdain to
put in for the a premium of that nature this danger is
obviated by combining an honorary premium
with a pecuniary one. There are many whoThere is no man who
is altogether insensible to the prospect of pecuniary
advantage, to it be it ever so inconsiderable:
but when the advantage is relatively inconsiderable,
there is many a manwho would conceive
it to be a disgrace to him were it evident
that it was that advantage and nothing else that
was his motive. This would not be the case were
the honorary reward made the principal and the
