Looking on you as a martyr to in so many excellent
causes, to toleration & to freedom of trade
to so many other points of sound & generous policy
&c. your late disappointments have but endeared
your character to me the more.
As to the object of this address, [it is what] I
will not dissemble it.
I will speak out:
I am doing then for you with regard to what I never yet did for
any man person who was not beneath stood above me, make the
first advances towards a personal acquaintance.
I am certain that by an from a intercourse and a friendship
if I should be found deserving of it, I should
reap the [to say nothing of besides reputation] a degree of delight and
instruction which I know not where to look for
elsewhere: whether as to any advantage which you on your part could find reap
your may account in any degree from mine, I fear
that if you see no ground to expect any in this
book I have no better title dependence than that to
rest my hopes upon.
