Chymical characters are absolutely useless. They
are only so many contrivances for expressing objects
which are not in every respect represented as well
without them. The pretence, and only pretence for the
use of them is brevity: and the use of this brevity is
to conjuring exhibit a summary of the Chemical system
in the form of a synoptic table. But this purpose
they do not answer in the smallest degree better than
the words to which they are used as substitutes. So
many objects so many quadrangular spaces in the
table. But not each of these spaces it would be just
as easy to put the word which constitutes the name
of the object as the mysterious character thus uselessly
substituted in the room of it.
The approaches to revenue in every walk can not
be made too smooth.
The nature of the Chinese language in which
every distinct word has its distinct character has been
assigned, and I believe with great reason as a
principal if not the only cause of the slow
progression of knowledge of every kind in that country progress made by that nation in the career of imp
