Vulgar Errors Corn.
That employing in other ways bread, corn & other substances which
are a fit for the food of men, is mischievous a grievance
[and injurious to population.]
Substances thus employ'd
1. Wheat in Starch
2. Wheat in Hair-powder
3. Wheat in distilled spirits
4. Oats in food for horses
5. Land in the production of oats, grass, & other food
for horses.
These purchases & things modes of consumption are in effect, though not
carried on with any such review, the most favourable to
population of any that can be devised. Carried on
to the length they are carried on in England, they
are sure and absolute preservations against farmers.
In Scotland The greatest difference between so a bad crop and
a good one, has been computed by intelligent authors
to be equal to 1/4 of a medium crop. What follows? that
if over and above what is the ordinary supply of
corn for the purposes of food, you can meet with
people who find their account in raising 1/4 is
much harder for other purposes, you secure, no
failure of the quantity required for food can ever happen.
