In the course of the conversation I was last honoured
with (no part of which will very speedily
be forgotten by me) I remember your a hintLordship remember intimated was
dropped a hint of was pleased to drop a hint or two about concerning a plan you had in
contemplation for the improvement of the Poor
Laws. Since then I have received a letter from
Scotland which if your Lordship should happen not
to be particularly apprised already of the footing
on which that matter stands in Scotland that part of the kingdom that is Scotland, I thought
that as a matter of curiosity at least it might perhaps be
some a satisfaction to you to peruse. A copy therefore
of such so much as relates to this subject I have therefore taken the liberty to enclose. The
writer is a Mr James Anderson, a very observing
intelligent man, who had added the experience of
a farmer to the studies of a man of science.
He is advantageously known in the world of letters
by several publications on the subjects of Agriculture
Chemistry, of Political oeconomy, particularly by two in particular
a book which is entitled Essays on agriculture in 2 vol. 8vo; the
other &
by another entitled Observations on National industry &c at in Scotland:
1 vol. 4to both of which contain very liberal &
extensive views. I can not say much however for
either his or his stile at any time, and
