Consider, Sir in a general point of view what
you now offer upon the whole. The question is how
it is to be paid for a course of services actually
performed in the Mr . In the course of
13 months Mr Henderson renders you certain
services: what proportion they took up of his time,
what proportion they bore to the services which
in the same interval you might by possibility
have extracted from him had you assumed yourself
compleat master of his time, does not exactly
appear: make them much or little just as
you please: at any rate you at least will hardly contend
that they tookfilled up more than half that
interval, that they amounted to more than half
the services which by possibility he could have
render'd you in the course of it. For these
services you offer him seem now to admitt that
some recompense is really due. What is now thatYou accordingly
recompense now offer him a recompense such
as he demanded I demanded and such which you
do not object to as too great: but So far all is
smooth: so far every thing is as it should be.
But then some how or other there have slipped
in two conditions: and what is the first of them? that
