Camblets & cloths are encreasing in their vents. The
Nankin Merchants who have been better paid for their Teas lately,
are the purchasers. The American trade is over. Ginsen which
they could not prepare so well as the English, has by being made
common, lost its repute, & the virtues which it was supposed
to possess are now no longer admitted, it is unfashionable & of no
price. The prohibition of Furs into China in resentment to
the Russians will finish the declining credit of the Americans
and their Trade to China must cease. The Chief of the Dutch
factory Mr Van Braam, who appears a man of intelligence,
has proposed to the Director General of Batavia to admit the
Americans at the Cape & to supply them from the Company's stores
all articles of India & China produce. He likewise has proposed to
open their ports every where, particularly for tin, so that instead
of endeavouring to monopolize that article, they shall become
only the Merchants of it, allowing who please to be the carriers.
Necessity may possibly force such a measure, contrary to the
Dutch Company's inclination. Another circumstance will grow
out of our having the Chinese trade in our hands. The Factors
of the other Companies who will not be able to maintain large
establishments, will be forced to assist the spirit of enterprize
& seek new Channels of Commerce, and something of the kind
is in Agitation. An Adventurer by the name of Douglas, who
was concerned with Mears in the Nootka sound business has
sailed lately from Macas in a Schooner. He came often to me.
He has made some discoveries on the N.W. of America, which
flatters him he shall find a passage through, & in this intent
he has sailed to prosecute his discovery. He is to collect
Furs as he goes on, & failing of success in finding a passage
he means to return to some of the Islands to which the Japanese
trade in the vicinity of Japan, and to endeavour by their means
to introduce either himself or his Furs to the Japanese notice.
I have no doubt he will succeed in the latter part of his
plan and that he will be repaid in Copper for his Furs
which will be a very good return.
