Sir
In a letter signed a Partizan inserted in your
paper of the 4th instant, and which intended is meant as a
defence of the Prussian treaty, I there think I discoversee
some faint traces of a much<add>signs </add>pretension to a commission from the authors;
of that measure, and the marks of rawness and vulgar
prejudice apparent in every line do not weaken discr
the probabilitysupposition<add>idea</add>. The Ministers have avowed the treaty:
I wish I could see somebodyman who has a name, and
by whose arguments they would would bind them be bound, avow the motives
of pretended policy that gave birth to it. My
name should not shrink from the controversy contest, though hethis
would not have equal claim to it it is not an equal one
For what drags into this controversy a most unwilling
combatant is not the ardour of serving a party."
about which I know as little as I care. It is not theany
preference I see given to Prussian rather or to above than Russian
to one ally ratheralliance or than another: it is not my preferring
though I do prefer, the harmlessrejected reveries by Sir
John Dalrymple to the adopted extravagancies of I know
not what fighting school-boy whom the directors of our
foreign affairs have employ'd to to think for them. It
is my detestation of the mad plunges we took in continental have been taking for these
4 years
