Letter II
Anderson and Elkington – Lett. II
Friday 2d Oct. 1795

Sir

Personality against individual unknown is the principal
business theme of the same or another "Friend to the Board of
"Agriculture
" who is witty upon "pipis" and "Twopenny", and
who signs himself whose signature is Jap. Passing by the wit, I shall confine
myself to what his seems to have been meant for argument.

The apologists admitt the priority of Dr Anderson's practice
as well as publication: the sole title of Mr Elkington
to the £1000 that has been given him of the public money
for the discovery of Dr Anderson's already discovered invention
is now rested upon superiority of "diligence". – "Mr Elkington
in thirty months has drained more land than
(settled in England) has
in thirty rain Dr in thirty years". – The subject of Dr Anderson's
field of operation operations was I presume his own farm. Mr Elkington's farm, in the neighbourhood
of Aberdeen in Scotland. Mr Elkington The subjects of
Mr Elkingtons more numerous operations are lie scattered over
England. He has laboured in a multitude of vineyards:
and though in no other can he have been rewarded so nobly
as in the Duke of Bedford's yet certainly in none can it is neither stated nor probable
he have that he has in any of them been treated as if he were unworthy of his hire.
Under circumstances like these it was that a more justerdiscerning more righteous
and even more illustrious
Judge than the even the President of the Board of Agriculture
pronounced gave judgment to certain claimants – "Verily, verily, ye

have, already ye honor already, "your reward". If reward
service
in Mr Elkington's instance service had kept pace with reward,
reward
