General Instructions

with regard to the mode of performing the above
-mentioned operation in an exhausted chamber.

Several of these operations being such for the
performance of which the experimental apparatus that which forms
the common accompaniment of ana philosophical
air pump could not by the mere enlargement
of its dimensions be made to suffice, something
in the way of instruction to shew how the an
common apparatus of that sort may be modified for the
purpose of adapting it to these purposes may
be found of use.

may be of use, either for the purpose of shewing how
the contrivances usedemployed in the an experimental apparatus
may be adapted to the purpose of the several
operations in the large way; or for the purpose of
adding to the ordinary apparatus some articles
what havemay not as yet have been included in

it.
