Defence
Against that in which this can be but an
Meantime another form there was of which the attack
in which had the attack been conceived, the defence might
not have been equally altogether quite so triumphant. In your character
of Judge you could do no otherwise than as you have
always done. But with this character of Judge,
how incongruous soever you the two characters may be
you have taken upon you to add the character of
legislator one of the representatives of the people: and it is in this
character of rep representative of the people that you are
at this moment sitting in judgment upon yourself your own dealing conduct in the
character of Judge. In your character of judge true it is
that be the grievance ever so great, it lies not within
your power to apply a remedy to it. But in your
character of legislator what is most perfectly and in
every sense in your power is to propose at least a remedy: and
if upon your a remedy, having having on your part been proposed and
advocated is in another quarter rejected, then it is
but not till then that you have done what is really in
your power towards the removal of this grievance.
If indeed, your was your def in part the article of revelation
such was were your want deficiency, as to have no
shape impress with the character of a hopeless one every
existence made by your hands, then indeed you would have your ....
excuse. But wher is the man to whose case every excuse
of this sort would so more manifestly and notoriously be applicable?
