Decr 1810
Prize
Such in respect of reward and punishment
motives for meantime to transgression and inducements to forbearance
principles of and principles of restraint causes and restraining causes
in the case of the delinquent naval Sea Commander so far
as the interest of his pocket his own interest alone is concerned.
But if the interest of his comrades – of all every
individual without exception with whom he lives, and
on whose the state of whose affections towards him the
whole comfort of his life depends – in a word like
Officers and men under his command, so far as
this concerns depends upon this interest and the interest which
in respect of social sympathy or prudence he himself
takes in it the inducement which he has to act
in the way in question in violation of his duty is altogether
without a counterprize. When Happen the worst
that can happen, he himself loses his share: happen
the worst that can happen, the shares of them their shares and
every of them remain entire.
Social feeling out of the question suppose the value
of the expected prize to be such that if the
Officer next in command to him, the shares supposing the prize taken the shares taken
together the shares would amount to £4,000. So far as depends
upon the Act, what hinders them is any one
of them from making up a prize £2,000 –
say £1,000 – and saying to him – let us make
sure of this prize. – If you escape being called in question,
you gain so much with trouble: if you are called in
question, there will be our fortunes will be made and, for yourself,
there will be £4000 –
there will be £1,000 –
at any rate.
