Decr 1810
Prize
Four years after by an Act penned by Mr Rose
this act is amended: but to those errors gross as
they are fated in one instance at least to the purpose
of the law, the amending hand does not extend itself.
What? – in out of so prodigious a number of persons
in the Contents of this Act, not one be given to the
Right Honourable Gentleman intimation of any one those
errors?
The case is that when a Statutes issued by of such a bulk
put together upon the established plan twill
be such a bulk, the hope of understanding them it, and
thence the task of reading them are given up by almost
everybody .... Rather there be at the trouble of sending
his thoughts on such a hopeless errand, everybody chooses to
trust to any body else.
Had errors as numerous as those been found in
every section, speck of encouragement could what should have been any persons
inducement to point may have found for pointing out so much as a single one
of them. From great characters in their high situations
what thence not to speak of thanks what
person not harmed by their countenance could have
presumed to hope for that the sort and degree of attention
which would have been necessary to the correction of these
or any other errors, Now & A communication of this sort
might it not be construed taken into an imputation of unfitness
with relation to those high situations? And is not
the Report in point upon a Cobbett's Register in which the Lord
and learned prophet of persons, the cutting author of the cutting act
as reputed as any made to say.
