§. 104
On this occasion In speaking of confusion I speak not merely of that almost universally
employed and most copious source of absurdity and confusion
the useless application of the plural number added to and mixt up with the singular, in a case cases where
in which without producing either ambiguity, obscurity
or inadequate expression, the singular number
and that alone might be, as if it were of a case
or ordinary discourse it would be, made to answer
in the compleatest manner every intended purpose.
On pain of perpetuating this confusion and colding
the phlegm of more unintelligibility from the text it will
be necessary in what follows to substitute singular
numbers throughout for the plurals employed in the text.
The object in view is it this – viz
Is is that according to after the death of a claimant the money in question
shall not it may not be paid to any person either to a representative
of his post mortem or to an Attorney of such
Representative and not to any other sort of person?
Or Is it that it shall may not be paid either to such Representative
or such his Attorney, unless the person
applying in such character produces at the same
the "Cheque" (whatever it be) that is to be granted
by the Inspection one a person bearing the office
of Inspector of Seamens Wills?
If this latter be the intended meaning (and such
it should seem to be) the word only if it supposing
it could be used with propriety would at any rate be
in a the wrong place: instead of immediately after the
word "paid" its proper place would be is immediately
before the words "upon production".
