J.B's Logical Arrangements
3
If their position merely be regarded – then the level they
occupy in the intellectual regions – these objects they may, according
to the figure of speech employed by Bolingbroke, be considered
merely as so many stations or resting places in that
more arduous one of his two vantage grounds.
If the purposes and uses to which they have
been applied be the object of regard, it will be there will be a more
convenient to change convenience in changing the metaphor figure, and consider them,
with Lord Bacon, as so many engines or instruments,
by the aid of which the different works that have
been undertaken have been either accomplished or
at lest laboured at, and attempted.
In some most instances the instrument has been constructed thus employed
by the author was constructed by himself alone of his own construction, without no part
of it being having been borrowed assistance from any other hand: in other instances
the instrument was found by him in one part at least
ready made, but either enlarged by himself, or
applied to uses to which he it had not been observed it by him to have been applied
by any one else. As often as the hand from which
he thus received it could be determined and recollected,
mention reference has here been made of it.
