III. Elements or dimensions of value in regard to pleasures and pains the case of a pleasure
of a pain.
It was in from Beccaria's little treatise on crimes and punishments
that I draw as I will remember, the first
hint of this a principle by which the precision and
clearness and incontestableness of mathematical calculation is given to
moral disquisitions is introduced for the first time into
the field of morals – a field to which in its own
nature it is applicable with as a propriety no less
incontestable, and when once announced brought to view manifest
then to that of physics, and including its most elevated quarter
the field of mathematics.

form these elements, seven in number, the following
views : awkward as this all of that class
naturally are, may serve for the present serve.(a) (a) Interior, long, certain, sure, not distant, fruitful pure &c
