I. Elements or dimensions of the value of a pain or pleasure:
viz. 1. Intensity. 2. Duration: these belong to it whether
considered as past or as future: and of them taken together its
magnitude is composed. To this, comes to be added, but
in this case only in which it is considered as yet to not past
come. 3. its the certainty or probability of its amount: to its proximity,
propinquity or remoteness.

Thus far when it is considered as confined to the breast of a
single individual: if considered as seated or capable of
being seated in a number of different breasts, it is
then considered as receiving another existing under a 5th dimension, viz.
extent: which extent has for its measure the number
of the individuals who are considered as being thus affected:
the greater that number the more extensive it is,
the less, the loss extensive.

Two other conceivable elements of value remain still to be
ascribed to it: viz. 6th. prod. 7. fecundity: 7. purity.
Of those elements neither, it is true, can belong
to the value of a pain or pleasure, when considered by
itself: in both of them instances it is considered
in as much as it is capable of being accompanied or
followed or accompanied by a sensations of the same
or a different kind: if by a sensation of the same kind
i.e. if being a pain by a pain, or being a pleasure
by a pleasure, it and it be considered as accompanied or followed
it may in proportion to the numbers of such accompany concomitant
or consequent sensations to be stiled termed fruitful or prolific or unprolific: if
by sensations of the opposite kind, it may in proportion to the
number of such concomitant or consequent sensations be termed
impure, in proportion to the number of those which it escapes or
fails being accompanied with pure.
