Sanctions or sources of obligation and inducement
five in number, viz.
1. The physical sanction
2. The moral or popular sanction
3. The political including the religious legal sanction
4. The religious sanction.
5. Confined in the The sanction of Sympathy – confined limited in its application
to a particular class of cases.

These sanctions are In so far as the word sanction
is employed, what is thereby brought to view is – not the
species of pleasure or pain by the prospect of which the
influence in human will is exercised and the effect
produced, but only the source from whence the pleasure
and pain in question is expected to flow.

1 In the case of the physical sanction, the cause source or root of the
pleasure or pain is in the pre-established nature of things, and not
in human agency.

Thus in the case of intoxicating liqnors. By In respect of the
fear of the pains resulting from the drinking of fermented liquors
when pursued to excess, the tendency of the force power
of the physical sanction is operates tends in a certain degree to restrain a man from
giving into such excess.(a)

(a) N.B. In respect of the pleasure that produced by the drinking
of the liquors in question where not pursued carried to any such degree as
to be productive of sensible ill effects, may it not be said and
infrequently that in the case of a person to whom such as
are productive of agreeable sensations is by the fear of the physical sanction that he is invited to excited so to action.
