Art. 1 Subjects of consideration, on this occasion Chapter the first Ch. 1, are the following
Pleasures and pains –

Happiness and unhappiness – pleasure and pain – good
and evil – ends and means, rules and principle, axioms
of pathology, physical and mental or say psychological
experience, observation and experiment – Of these
objects many are mutually correlative; all of them are intimately connected
and make give and receive explanation to and from and from each other.

Happiness is a word employed to signify denote designate the sum of
the pleasures experienced during that quantity of time which is in under
question consideration, distinction made or not made of the quantity of those experiences
during that same quantity of time.

Unhappiness is a word employed to signify denote designate the sum
of the pains experienced during the quantity of time which is under
consideration, distinction made or not made of the quantity of pleasure
experienced during that same quantity of time.

Good is a word employed to signify denote designate either pleasure
or pain exemption from pain, or its cause compleat or incompleat efficient or effected
of
efficient and more or less effective of either.

Evil is a word employed to signify denote designate either pain
or loss of pleasure, or a cause efficient, more or less effective of either.

Insert here good & Evil

End is a word employed to signify denote designate a good the
prospect of eventually experiencing which as a matter pointing to
any on the part at the hands of any sinister being the some good which
is an object of his desire and hope.

Means is a word employed to signify denote designate any substance
state of things or matter considered as contributing to the attainment
of the good which on that same occasion is considered regarded as an
end. 20 Aug. 1831. Means or say Means of effectuation

Pleasure and exemption from pain – or respective with their multipliers
happiness and exemption from unhappiness are the only ultimate ends
and of every sensation being the only ultimate ends of action.
