☞ May 12 1831. Employ not the about Principles, Rules &c.

On the present occasion small two only are the rules principles
with the correspondent exhortative rules, sets of reasons and
axioms which I shall have need to submitt to your consideration:
these are – 1. the greatest happiness principle,
and 2. the Disappointment minimizing principle.

Rule (exhortative) correspondent to the disappointment minimizing
principle, this – If Of a number of competitors, actual or
eventually possible, for the object of desire in question, give
it, exception excepted to that one in whose instance, in
the event of his not possessing it, pain of disappointment
will be produced in greatest quantity.

The exception is – where by any different disposition
happiness in greater quantity, probability takes most
account will be produced.

Of any such exception the existence ought not to be
assumed; if it does exist, it lies upon him by whom
the existence of it is asserted, to make proof of its doing
so.
