last I was informed that it was unobtainable – & there
the matter ended.
In 1789 I put an end to the unprovoked war against
(excited by Geo III) by my Anti Machiavel letter.
"A little more than 41 years ago it happened to me to
have a paper war with George the 3d; & about the year
1791 the royal indignation was sharpened by the part
I took in the French Revolution of that day & in this
indignation coupled with the crime committed by my
brother in being my brother (for what business had he
to be a brother to so disloyal a man as myself), – it
is in these that I beheld the sole tho' fully sufficient
cause &c.
There was a Com specially appointed to consider if the indemnity
to be given to me – [Mr Long took an active part – but was set against
me by some former collusion – Rose supported you] the compensation
made was £20,000 – I shewed I should have set terms but,
not a farthing till I had cleared away the expence –
