his extended Successor in the course of the negotiation)
had lessened whatever disposition they might otherwise
have had to stipulate for such a clause. Mr White,
to whom the whole business was perfectly new, conceived
with great propriety the idea of a clause
to that effect, and inserted it accordingly. Mr Bentham,
now it is proposed to him, certainly cannot,
object to it: but he hopes it will not appear unreasonable
on his part to stipulate for the modification
of it by the arbitration thus above proposed.
Mr Soll. Gen. should he be of that opinion, will
be pleased to insert the clause in the above words or
such better words as may occur to him preference.
It surely cannot be necessary to refer the matter back
to Mr Pitt & Mr Long for their consent to the
modification since the power which it leaves untouched
is so much more than they expected or required.
Act 18 §°. 19. Amendment proposed in answer
to Mr Soll:r Gen:ls Query in the margin. After
"year" instead of "paying him" insert "and so year
after year untill the time when the first payment in
the superannuation annuity or annuities to be granted
to such Convict or Prisoner according to the 15th
article shall have become due & payable from and
after which time it shall be at the option of such
late Convict or Prisoner either to receive such annuity
