to the English than I expected to find it – a vicinity which
I rendered a good 1/2 of what I was reading in some degree
intelligible to me. – The other was the Gazette de
Leyde
– a very small 4 to consisting if I do not misrecollect
of 4 leaves published in French by Etienne
Lusac – to my no small delight I found it the political
gazette of all Europe; the most important diplomatic
documents or say State papers whether in the epistolary
style transmitted by one political State to another
or indigenous published for the information of the inhabitants
of the several countries – subjects of the several
sovereignties. In none of our English Newspapers did
any use appear to have been made of any of the
treasures matter continually flowing from all those several
sources.

On my arrival at man's estate as soon as
it was in my power I began taking in in the character
of a subscriber this valuable periodical and continued
so to do till untill the commencement of my long-continued
expatriation, which commenced in July or Augt.
1785 & continued till to Jany or Feby 1788. Soon after
my return I resumed my subscription to this same
Newspaper and to this in this resumption may be seen ascribed the
origin of the war of which I shall have to speak.

To state it fully & clearly it will however be necessary
to go considerably further back.

Between the ages of 7 & 7 I was for about 1/2 a
year under the care of an intelligent French teacher
whom for that purpose my father kept in his house.
After a single small book of fairy tales came a
little swarm of the best French works of those days
in all which his tuition and amusement went hand
in hand. The earliest of them all was the "Télémaque" of Fenelon.
