So much for the injury: now for the revenge.
A few may be still alive in to in whose remembrance mind
the appellative "Target Martin" may will revive
the idea of the occurrence which in the early days
of George the Third became associated with that
name. The Editor of the periodical styled the
North Briton – the the so notorious John Wilks
had for some time been the bête noire of those
same early days. The situation, not to speak of
the frame of mind, of Henry the Second th was that
of George the Third. That which Thomas à Becket
was to Henry the Second, John Wilks, was bating
the difference between the saint and the sinner,
was to George III. Imagined or communicated to this
Martin the desires and longings produced by the
wounded feelings of his Sovereign Lord the omnipotent
giver of good gifts. By this self-devoted subject so valorous
was his loyalty preparation was made for acting the
tragedy in which George the Third should appear in
the character of the old man of the mountain
and Martin in that of one of his missionaries,
and in the character of the devoted victim the author of the
paper war against all Scotland the above-mentioned Wilks.
