1831. March 27
J.B. v. G.3.

"But if it would be any satisfaction to you such a motion
"I will make". My answer was in substance "that I
saw the matter in the same light he did and that it
was not my wish that he should give himself any
such trouble to no purpose". At that same time or not
long after I remember his informing me that between
him & Mr Pitt there had been a misunderstanding which
he hoped would be but a temporary one but that they
preserved a communication with each other through a
common friend intimate, Ld Carrington: by which
style and title mentioned with whether that or that of
plain Mr Smith I do not now remember. I have strong
reason to be persuaded that at that time the real source
of the impediment was not known to any of his
Majesty's subjects other than the Prime Minister – not to
his most intimate private friends for such were the
Wilb Wilberforce &
Ld Carrington & Mr Wilberforce –
and even to his most intimate official friend
Mr Secretary Dundas created afterwards Lord Melville.

In regard to Mr Pitt my ground reason for that
same persuasion is this – He expressed a strong sense
of the injury done me and the cruelty manifested
by so unexampled a procrastination: but a cause
capable of accounting for it was obvious to him: The
cause was this
the cause was this – it was the state of that
Minister's opinions on the subject of religion: in a word his unbelief –
a circumstance which according to the theory of my
pious friend was in the case of any man sufficient
to account for whatever was amiss.
